    Description

    This piece was presented to Joseph F. Lamb on October 7, 1950, by the Archbishop Hughes General Assembly of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree. He was elected as Supreme Secretary of the Knights of Columbus in 1943. He had the privilege of sitting in the first row at Pope John XXIII’s (Now Saint John XXXIII) Coronation on October 28, 1958. The possibility always exists that this piece could have been in his possession at that historical event.
    This item weights 18.40 grams and is marked Sterling. The value of this item does not exist in its precious metal content or its actual age, it rests in the ownership by a long term Supreme Officer of the the Knights of Columbus.

    JOSEPH LAMB, 71, K. OF C. SECRETARY; Mechanical Engineer Dead —Honored for His Work
    Joseph F. Lamb, a mechanical engineer and Supreme Secretary since 1939 of the Knights of Columbus, died yesterday in St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He was 71 years old and lived at 1201 Shakespeare Avenue, the Bronx.
    As Supreme Secretary, Mr. Lamb supervised the administration of the national Supreme Office of the Order in New Haven.
    He was born in New York, attended Christian Brothers schools, received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cooper Union and did graduate work at Fordham and Columbia Universities. During World War I he served overseas with the 39th Regiment of the Army Engineer Corps.
    Early in his engineering career, Mr. Lamb was with the Third Avenue Railway, and from 1924 to 1939 he was with the Texas Oil Company.
    Mr. Lamb, a licensed professional engineer in New York and New Jersey, was president from 1933 to 1935 of the Bronx County Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers. He also was president in 1936 and 1937 of the Grand Jurors Association of Bronx County.
    A member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he belonged also to the Society of American Military Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
    Mr. Lamb joined the Knights of Columbus in 1913. He became successively grand knight of St. Augustine Council in the Bronx, chairman of the New York Chapter, chairman of the board of district deputies for Manhattan and the Bronx and mmaster of the fourth degree in the second New York district and state deputy of New York.
    In 1936, Mr. Lamb was appointed a member of Cardinal Hayes Lay Committee on the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. On the recommendation of Cardinal Spellman, he was made a knight commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Pius XII in 1942, and in 1946 was promoted to the rank of grand officer.
    Mr. Lamb received an honorary LL. D. degree from Manhattan College in 1947, and the annual Charles Carroll Award of the Charles Carroll General Assembly of the fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus in 1958. In 1946 he was one of a group that accompanied Archbishop Spellman to Rome for his elevation to the rank of Cardinal.
    A member of the American Legion, Mr. Lamb belonged also to the Holy Name Society, the Fordham University Alumni Association, the American Irish Historical Society and other organizations.
    Surviving are 4 sons, Richard, David, Joseph Jr. and Andrew, and 24 grandchildren.
