Description
1928-S SLQ HIGH GRADE With Teardrop Die BreakThis is a NICE, HIGH GRADE example of one of the less encountered Standing Liberty Quarter SERIES ERROR COINS.
The generic “Teardrop” error only is seen on just a few years and Mintmarks (mostly S mints). Due to where it occurred, they can be identified in very low grades. Even when the date and mintmark are worn away, the date and mintmark can be determined by the unique shape of each such year’s teardrop die break.
The Teardrop is in a deep recess in the design, which corresponds to a high spot on the die. The teardrop happens after a die clash( or many), when two high spots meet, without a blank in between. Hardened metal can be brittle. All the teardrops I have seen seem to happen in stages-first a small break, then bigger, etc. When the inspector saw the error, the die was changed. There are sub-varieties- with different reverse dies, some showing die clashes, and some not. A collection of these would be most interesting- showing progression sequences, and the like. These would be spectacular in all high grades.
This coin is a high, but slightly circulated, grade example of a late stage teardrop. It is very slightly toned, as the pictures show.
The coin in the pictures is the actual coin the successful bidder will receive.
If you have any questions, please be sure to ask well before the closing date, to give me ample time to respond. I do not accept returns, so please be sure before you bid.
